Description:

The Systems Administrator I is responsible for all aspects of systems administration for various Computing Services systems worldwide, including networks, applications, databases, and environmental systems, including second and third level support; including answering Remedy Questions, leading projects to solve/design solutions for open requests, advanced troubleshooting techniques including but not limited to; designing new configuration solutions, writing/designing and/or modifying programs to implement new solutions. This includes skills to perform implementation, configuration, coordination, control, maintenance, troubleshooting of systemic problems, including but not limited to: stopping and restarting services, working with ISO to design new/solve/implement security issues, usage monitoring and the development/design of specialized system procedures within the Computing Services environment. This position provides second-tier support to the global campus.


Essential Requirements:
One to two years of increasingly responsible computer applications programming and systems analysis experience, as well as experience supporting and troubleshooting operation systems and network technology. Experience with: Software development in UNIX and Windows environments; TCP/IP and LAN technologies; Web and systems development using Apache, Perl, SQL (MySQL, Oracle), XHTML, XML and XSLT; Linux, Solaris, and Windows operating systems. Strong technical skills with Windows Operating System: including but not limited to Active Directory, Windows Security in TCP/IP environment. Experience with other network operating systems (Linux, MacOS). Experience providing system administration and technical support, proven problem solving skills; project and time management experience; experience working with other people (both technical and non-technical) as a team. Demonstrated competency in systems documentation.

Job Functions:
Essential:
Design, configure and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software. 25 % of time spent on design/integration and development to incorporate new solutions in to the Computing Services environment. Install new hardware/software systems and design/program test suites to ensure that applications meet production standards.
Design, and write scripts to resolve performance problems and automate systems administration tasks, including projects to design/implement new procedures/programs to support division’s efforts. 15%
Design and implement new Unix/Network/Windows/Environmental monitoring and response scenarios/systems. Write shell and PERL, Windows, Network and SQL scripts to help automate monitoring and response of incidents. This is approximately 20% of the “day to day “activities of a Systems Administrator.
Design, coordinate, and implement network security measures to protect data, software and hardware in response to ISO security audits 10%
Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations. 10%
Monitor, support, maintain, and respond to systems incidents, working with the various service development groups for Windows, Unix, Network, Colocation and Environmental systems. This effort is 5% of the day to day activities of a first level systems administrator.
Ensure that all system administrator design projects are documented, including design documents, ongoing status reports, and summary reports. Document and log all changes to system software and configurations. Edit and revise project justifications, project documentation, and other reports and documents. 5%
Monitor network performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made, and to determine where changes will be made in the future. Perform or assists in troubleshooting and diagnosing production problems; correct identified problems. Participates in disaster recovery testing. 5%
