Senior Systems Administrator

The Senior Systems Administrator (based in Rockville Centre) is responsible for maintaining all production systems. This includes a production database, a storage cluster, about 20-25 other Linux and FreeBSD machines in our NYC datacenter as well as our other geolocated web clusters. You should consider yourself a Linux/Unix expert - if you have only used Linux in a hobby environment, this is not the position for you. You will be the primary contact for all hardware-related issues for our production systems.
Important traits:
- Strong experience with installing, maintaining and administering Linux (Fedora, RHEL, Debian, CentOS) and FreeBSD in a production environment
- Strong knowledge of standard networking concepts - TCP, IP, UDP, ping, NAT, firewalling (iptables), NFS, VPNs, subnets, netmasks, and everything relating to mail (mail in this context being sent by the machines themselves, not by users). Routing protocols like BGP and ARP are a plus.
- Experience with lots of different hardware, networking appliances, all aspects of machine hardware upgrades, from disks to memory to motherboards. Knowledge of high end storage hardware - fibre channel, SAS arrays - is a plus. Familiarity with Cisco networking equipment and any other managed switches is a plus.
- Experience configuring, purchasing, racking and installing machines, keeping in mind long-term costs like power consumption.
- Experience administering servers remotely
- Familiarity with monitoring systems such as Nagios or Zabbix to ensure overall system health
- Respond to alerts in a timely manner and be proactive in their resolution
- Security conscious, looking for and suggesting ways to improve the infrastructure
Other plus traits:
- Any scripting language experience - shell scripts, Perl, etc.
- Experience with DNS (BIND 9), Apache 2.x with PHP and mod_perl, Tomcat 5.5x and mod_jakarta.
- Experience with tape backups
- Database experience (our production DB is PostgreSQL).
- Datacenter/rack cabling "best practices" experience
- Experience with ground-up datacenter build-outs
